The Tema Foundation is a non-profit organization that was established with a heartfelt mission to support the mental health and resilience of first responders and frontline workers and their families, recognizing the unique challenges faced by those who dedicate their lives to serving others.
Founded in memory of Tema Lisa Conter, our journey began with a focus on providing critical resources, education, and community support for first responders and frontline workers, acknowledging the toll their work can take on both their mental health and that of their loved ones. Over the years, our mission has evolved in response to a growing awareness that mental health challenges impact individuals in every profession and walk of life. This expanded vision is rooted in our commitment to addressing the emotional and psychological struggles faced by people in all roles, from healthcare and education to business and community service.
At the Tema Foundation, we believe that mental health support should be universally accessible, and that fostering resilience, understanding, and hope is essential in every workplace. Our programs include workshops, programs and customized curriculum, tailored to the needs of diverse work environments, aiming to build compassionate and supportive communities that prioritize mental well-being. As we continue to grow, we remain inspired by Tema Lisa Conter’s legacy and are driven by a desire to create a culture where everyone feels equipped to face life’s challenges with strength, and no one feels alone. Through our ongoing commitment, we are dedicated to transforming lives, empowering individuals, and supporting a future where mental health is valued and safeguarded in every aspect of society.
The Tema Foundation was established in memory of Tema Lisa Conter, a vibrant and compassionate young woman whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 25. Born and raised in Halifax, Tema was known for her humour, warmth, and deep connections with those around her.
In 1988, her life ended in a senseless act of violence, which left her family, friends and even the responding frontline workers devastated. It was through this experience that the immense emotional toll these workers face became undeniably clear.
The Tema Foundation was born out of a desire to not only honour Tema’s legacy but to address the urgent need for mental health support among first responders and frontline workers and their loved ones.
Today, the Foundation provides education, resources, and care to all workplaces, ensuring Tema’s memory lives on through the lives we uplift and the resilience we help build.
