Meet Captain Christopher Rochon
Captain Christopher Rochon joined the Canadian Armed Forces in Ottawa, Ontario in 1996 as a Maritime Surface Officer. He graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 2000 with a Bachelor of Computer Engineering, joining the fleet in Victoria, BC aboard (Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship) HMCS REGINA.
Serving in the West Coast fleet over the next decade, he held positions as the Underwater Warfare Officer, Communications Officer, Deck Officer, Weapons Officer, Combat Officer, and Anti-Air Warfare Controller in HMCS REGINA, VANCOUVER, ALGONQUIN, and OTTAWA for various operations and exercises, including Operation APOLLO, PACEX, WESTPLOY, and RIMPAC. In 2010 Captain(Navy) Rochon was a member of the Maritime Component Commander’s staff for the planning and execution of security operations during the Vancouver Olympic Games.
Capt Rochon moved to Ottawa in 2011 to work at National Defence Headquarters under the Chief of Force Development, first as a project director on the Joint Intelligence and Information Fusion Capability project, then as the section head for the Directorate of Capability and Structure Analysis Support Developmental Lab, while also completing his Masters of. Business Administration in Global Management. He achieved his Surface Ship Command qualification in June 2011 and in summer 2013 Capt Rochon was selected for the Joint Command and Staff Program in Toronto, from which he graduated with a Masters in Defence Studies.
Capt Rochon assumed Command of HMCS WHITEHORSE in 2014, deploying on Operation CARIBBE and assisting US Coast Guard and Navy consorts in the interdiction of almost 6000 kg of cocaine. Capt Rochon assumed duties as the Executive Officer of HMCS REGINA in May 2015 and as Executive Officer of HMCS OTTAWA in April of 2016, deploying on Operation PROJECTION in March of 2017. He the assumed duties as the Senior Policy Officer for Northeast Asia in the Director-General International Security Policy organization in August of 2017. He assumed Command of HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN in June of 2019 while also acting as the Chief of Staff for Fleet Operations at Canadian Fleet Pacific Headquarters, including for the stand-up of Operation LASER in the Spring of 2020.
He assumed Command of HMCS HALIFAX in January 2020, and deployed on Operation REASSURANCE as the Flagship Commanding Officer for Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 in northern Europe. He was promoted to Captain(Navy) and was appointed as Director – Global Partnerships and Initiatives in the Policy Group in the summer of 2022.
Capt Rochon is married to Wendy Rochon (née Draper) and has two children, Dylan and Helen.
